The Kuravan and Kurathi monument connects the destination with the history of the Idukki region and its iconic Idukki Dam. And the name Ramakkalmedu itself is connected to one of the region’s most enduring legends.
Located at the eastern edge of Kerala, Ramakkalmedu looks across the border towards the fertile plains and settlements of Tamil Nadu. From the high viewpoints, visitors can enjoy expansive views of the Cumbum and surrounding valleys.

The Mythical Legacy Behind Ramakkalmedu

A story passed through generations

According to local folklore and mythology, during Rama’s exile in the forest, Ravana abducted Goddess Sita and fled toward his kingdom of Lanka. Rama and his younger brother, Lakshmana, embarked on a desperate search across the Indian subcontinent. When Rama reached the high mountain ranges of the Western Ghats, he ascended to the highest peak of this area to get a clear vantage point. He stepped onto the massive rock at the summit to scan the vast horizon for any sign or path taken by Ravana. Because the land was blessed by the touch of his holy feet, the local inhabitants named the entire hill range after this event. Today, the site maintains as a spiritual aura, drawing both devotees and travelers who want to stand on the very rocks where the historic search took place.

The high vantage point mentioned in the legend aligns perfectly with the actual geography of the hill station. Standing at an altitude of about 3,500 feet above sea level, Ramakkalmedu offers a striking, wide-angle view of the villages and towns of neighboring Tamil Nadu. It is also famously known as the “Cradle of Wind,” ranking as one of the windiest places in Asia.

Whether you come as a pilgrim, traveller, nature lover or curious explorer, the story invites you to pause and experience the hills differently.
